I ask myself this question all the time. Technology firms from all over the world reach out to discuss what we do and how we can help them. But, there are times when we never hear from them again or they register and then fail to complete the first task we require.
Let me tell a story about how this subject came into my head.
A few months ago, a company contracted me to help them with a large trade show in Las Vegas. I was happy to do it for a couple of reasons. First, the money was great. Second, the opportunity to help a 25 – 30 million-dollar company was very exciting for me. I helped this company put together their handouts, messaging and all the things that are needed to make a trade show of this size successful. And, trust me; it was very successful for this client. Near the end of the trade show, the CEO pulled me aside and asked me some point blank questions about how the show was handled, what I thought the next move was and other high level questions. I gave him my recommendations from a “high” level. I also gave them a plan of action to make the trade show even more successful in the future.
Fast forward to just this week when I received an email response from one of the Directors of this company. He was replying to a lead from the trade show I forwarded to them who never got a response. Basically, he told me that although they had solicited my honest feedback, they didn’t appreciate my candor. None the less, they took my recommendations from a sales perspective and ran with them. As a result of my suggestions as well as our efforts at the show, they brought on a number of new clients. However, they did not try my suggestions related to the operations of their organization and I can safely say they are still struggling in this area.
I’ve said it once and I will say it 1000 times, you may not always like what I have to say and you are welcome to disagree with me, but you have hired me for my knowledge and experience. I may not have ALL the answers but I do know what works in business because, trust me when I say, I have probably tried it and failed or succeeded with it before you.
Take a step back from your business and try to look at it from the outside. Then you can better listen to the consultants, coaches or advisors you have hired. Don’t keep making the same mistakes over and over and over again. If it doesn’t work right today, trust me when I say, it probably won’t work right tomorrow, or the next day or the next week.
